Viator FUV Self Guided Island Adventure Tour

For Joe’s birthday we wanted a little adventure so we searched Viator and found these adorable little FUV ‘cars’ to rent for an island tour. The FUV, which actually stands for fun utility vehicle (I joked that it was the meaning but it actually IS, lol) is a cross between a motorcycle and a tiny car. It is open with a roll cage and two people can ride, one in front of the other. We were both excited to try these little cars, so we ventured to the other side of the island to have our FUV adventure!

The tour includes a free pickup within 8 miles however we were about an hour and a half drive. Luckily, the four hours started when we got there so we didn’t have to stress.

We pulled into an industrial building to meet TJ, the owner. He gave us a 2 minute walkthrough of the vehicle and we got to pick between the East side or South side tours. We had never been to the South side of the island so we chose that one and downloaded a pre-designed route to follow on our Google maps. The FUV had a USB outlet and we brought our cord, as advised. The phone holder was up front so Joe could mount it and hook up music/directions from his iPhone. We did one lap around the parking lot and were off on our adventure!

The craziest thing was immediately pulling out and going about 50 MPH down the highway! It was kind of scary being in this open vehicle for the first time and going so fast, but it was steady and felt safe enough. We ventured down the road a bit and began feeling the sun beating on us so we stopped at a Longs and doused ourselves in sunscreen.

We followed the trip to Spouting horn, which is a really cool natural lava tube that shoots water up like a geyser, had a delicious mahi mahi burger at Cabana Bar and grill and drove through the most beautiful scenery. After 4 hours, we were tired, turned in the FUV and made our way back to the other side of Kauai.

My takeaways:

5 out of 5 stars! We absolutely LOVED this adventure. The best thing is you can go where you want for as long as you like (within the 4 hours), however the guide was perfect for a loose itinerary..

Definitely bring sunscreen and wear your hair tied up if possible.

Bring a charging cord since your phone is your guide

There is a level of danger since you are driving on the road with cars, but as long as you don’t mind going fast or letting them pass you will be fine. Always exercise caution, of course.

Have fun! This would be fun to do in a group and explore together.
